these subs come in 12w3-d2, d4, and d6 models i believe so that you can use whatever amp you want and nearly any number and get a good end impedance. and as for your other question they are proven subs and are very great performors.

if your mono amp puts out 1000 watts RMS, you can power them with it.  Just get (4) D2's, wired each sub for series, so they are 4 ohms each.  Then Wire 2 of them in series, the other 2 in series.  that will give you two 8 ohm loads, then wire those 2 loads in parallel... voila!  a 4 ohm load

you can do the same with (4) D4's, but wire the subs for 2 ohms (both voice coils in parallel) and you will have a final load of 2 ohms!

AHHHH!  Don’t you get it?  Do you know anything about ohm loads? Aaaahhhh!

Here it is, your answer and a few others.  Where are you getting these subs?  I hope you are getting them from an authorized dealer because it sounds like you are trying to build some sort of SPL monster, and will drive them hard.  Besides, if you where dealing with a dealer they would be answering all these questions.  If you are trying to achieve a SQ setup running your amp at 1ohm is not the way to go.  Go to the JL Audio website for more information on ohm loads and nearly any configuration you can imagine.

4 DVC drivers with Voice Coils in Series / Parallel
Connecting the two voice coils of each driver in series (+ to -) and the drivers themselves in parallel (+ to +, etc.) will result in the following impedances:
Dual-6 Ohm Subwoofers: 3 Ohms
Dual-4 Ohm Subwoofers: 2 Ohms
Dual-2 Ohm Subwoofers: 1 Ohm
