I came upon an article in the Wall Street Journal today mentioning to growing trend for manufacturers to integrate more into the stereos.

We've all heard of this before but, the way they were telling it was like almost all of the cars will have some type of tie-in with the rest of the electrical system. Anything from A/C controls to door chimes....you name it!

Has anyone in the field really noticed this and what are your plans to keep up with it?

My prediction is that aftermarket will always be desired, but some new car owners may be content with what the factory offers if it's good enough. As with anything else these days, mobile electronics is a fast changing business.

I feel the same way I have a friend with a new Mazda 6 and we have already added an amp and some subs but he is ready to put an Alpine and is waiting for a dash kit to be manufactured and I just dont think it is going to happen I am sure that Alpine is going to end up in the glove box.  It scare's me because I think that it is no big secret that the Motor Co. do not like the aftermarket industry but not only are the making it impossible to upgrade when it is possible it cost the consumer an arm and a leg. I will always upgrade but I hope that it does not become to expensive for a average person just want a little better SQ.

Its true manufactors are trying somewhat to cater to the public and growing trends such as integrating navigation systems and screens and DVDs and MP3s and small sub systems and so on. Of coarse the quality of most of the factory systems just doesnt compare to whats out there in the aftermarket world because the mass production of the products has to be cost effective when you are installing thousands of them in your cars. So as long as theres people like you and me who always want better , there will always be someone to make aftermarket adapters for the better high end equipment. Speaking of integrating......can someone tell me why some or most GM cars have wired part of the ignition system of the engine THRU the radio in the Dash? Is this some kind of attempt or plot by GM to make us keep the factory radio for some reason. Thinking the car wont run with out the factory radio? Did they not think someone would find a way around this? Whats the logic behind this?

Yeah they are popping up more and more and I doubt that's gonna change anytime soon. The new malibu displays the "door ajar" messages on the radio screen among other things just to name one example. There's a few others that are much more integrated than that as well. This is nothing new though it's not like it was unexpected and is taking people by surprise. The industry has always had to change suit and stay on top of things and that's the same thing that we are doing now. Nowadays the biggest thing is OEM integration, no questions about it. If you can't remove something, find ways to work with it and use it to your advantage.

This is news to me I've never seen a car with this yet.. Care to list "some or most" of the ones your referring to?

Maybe the old School Low Tech approach will come back.

Under Dash Mounting Kits.

Or Maybe Trunk Mounted systems with a LCD Screen and a Remote Control that you can Install almost anywhere. Just leave the old system there and Install a complete System elsewhere.

When the Stereo is removed the Car can not start as an antitheft device.

In most GM vehicles you can remove the radio and the car WILL still start!! I deal with these vehicles everyday, maybe one or two of the 05' models will do this, but i have not seen or heard of any yet.
