factory stereo problem

I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am GT with the factory stereo and speakers in it. Both of the rear speakers stopped working. I was checking to see if they were bad by hooking another speaker to the wiring in the trunk. The speaker that I was using worked on borh sides of the car, so I figured borh of the speakers were bad. Later that day I drove the car and both of the rear speakers were working again. Now, a few days later, both of them have stopped again. I can hook up a speaker to the wiring and they will start back working. Could this be a short in the factory radio's rear signal? Any ideas?'85 Toy

Most likely an intermittent disconnection somewhere along the line.  The way those wires are bound and gagged in harnesses, it would be a nightmare to find the fault.  This is the time, you know.........put in an aftermarket system.  What are they, the original speakers?Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Yes, everything is original. I would have already upgraded everything, but the car is my wifes, and she wants it like it is. I will probably have to change over everything, but I will try replacing just the rear speakers first, just to see if they are the problem. '85 Toy

i service lots of these situations... the voice coils develop intermittent connections.... replace the speakersKevin Gerry
