97 Chevy Speaker Job

Good afternoon all.  Long time, no post, but I need some info once again.

The job before me is a 97 Chevy 1500 pickup extended cab, the relatively simple job of replacing the rear speakers.  I ask because the circumstances for this particular job are such that I won't have a lot of time to work with and I don't get an opportunity to scout the truck first.  I just need to know - how easy is it to change these speakers?  Do I have to take apart a whole bunch of paneling in the back to get to them, or just a couple pieces of trim?  I don't want to take the job if it means disassembling half the truck, but by the same token I'm hoping it's just a simple cover off, speaker out, speaker in, cover on job.Assuming there's someone here who's done one of these trucks before.... advice?  Thoughts?Thanks in advance!

Unless the speakers are only covered by small grills just larger than the speakers, you would have to remove most of the interior trim to replace the speakers.sparky

Fak me, I hate these trucks. Be prepared to snap the rear top panel that holds the dome light. Remove the rear seat, remove the panel below the window. Remove the top panel (expecty it to break). Remove all seat belts. Remove side panels - change speakers.Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

yes it is a stinky little job isnt it?   we were forced to do these vehicles all the time under GM warranty, but now when asked i simply tell a customer,  no problem..... 4 hours labour to install the 20 dollar speakers you bought.....Kevin Gerry

Remove the seat belts and rear storage pocket that runs along the back floor. Pull out the bootom of the panel that runs under the rear window and then push it up to release the clips. Remove the side panels (screwed and clipped) by pulling the bottom edge toward the opposite side of the truck. The roof panel does not need to come out and don't try to. It can only be removed after all this is done without breaking it. Patience is virtue on these trucks. Be sure to test the speakers before you put the truck together.sparky
