heard from an authorized dealer that Nakamichi is done, again. They were not present at CES. I guess paying over a grand for a deck and not having it function is a little unnerving,

After its latest bankruptcy, Nakamichi was taken over by the Grande Group in Hong Kong.  Grande owns the Nakamichi, Akai, Kawa and Sansui brands.  Akai is planning a major push back into the US market with some interesting new higher-end tube amplifier based home products, and a promissed line of "high end" car audio.  Nakamichi is focussing their efforts in home theatre in the US and may pull out of the car audio market completely.  Look for some of the Nak technology to show up in the new Akai-branded gear when it hits the street.  They'll be imported through ESI in Woodland Hills Ca. (for any of you retailers out there who might be interested.)

As an adition to this, they are also going to be releasing some planar speakers as well.
