I would like to replace the factory Infinty system in my 2000 Dodge Caravan. This will be a listening quality system with the ability to thump at least a little bit.

I am thinking of starting the system off with an Alpine 9833 which would power the front and rear stage. Looking at the speaker fit guide it would appear that I could fit up to a 5 1/4" in the dash and a 5"X7" in the front door location. Either another pair of 5"X7"'s in the rear or maybe even some 6"X9"'s. I am leaning toward the Polks, but have also considered Infinity and Pioneer.

Eventually I will have a box built under the rear bench or between the rear captains chairs to house a 10" sub, may be able to go with a 12" but not sure I need to. Like I said I would like to be able to bump a little bit. I do have a 15 year old son who likes rap, rock and jazz like I do.

I am looking for opinions on the speakers. Should I go with the dash locations? Door locations? Both locations? What about the rears, I know that SQ systems typically use these for fill only. Would it be worth going with round speakers over the oval 5"X7" in the door? Will the Alpine be powerful enough to keep up with the speakers that are rated for between 6 and about 40 watts rms? I will eventually purchase an amp for the sub when I build the box for this portion of the system.

Thanks,

John

John, head out and listen to speakers is the best thing you can do. First though, take that door panel off and ensure the size of the speaker you are looking for. Make some long term planning in the system, for instance, when you add the sub, maybe use a amp to power all of the speakers. This will afford you a louder attainable volume level with far greater protection of the speakers (nice for a 15yr old son). Buy speakers that are in your budget and you like the sound of. A caravan can sound great, as it is a family vehicle, rear speakers should be there for the family to enjoy.

Have a look at MB Quart and Eclipse as well. IMO, they are going to be a nice upgrade at a minimal cost that would make a large difference in your system. I like the idea of the front sub between the seats, it is easy to make it into a storage unit at the same time or maybe incorporate a dvd system there as well, lots of options doing this.

New questions same system.

I will be purchasing the Alpine 9833, I would like to upgrade at stock speaker locations as follows:

Dash 5 1/4" coaxil's

Front door's 6 1/2" coaxial's

Rear behind 2nd row probably 6X9 maybe 6 1/2" coaxial

Will the Alpine be able to power all of these speakers? Dash and doors off front output rears speakers off rear output?

Properly.....no and I do not recommend it either. The problem is that it presents a 2 ohm load to the tiny little amp in the Alpine, a load that it was not engineered to handle.

Then if I install the Alpine will it power up all of the speakers for the Infinity system already installed?

Okay I am now thinking about using the JL XR653CSI's for my front stage. My thoughts are the 6.5" in the doors, the 4'" in the dash and the tweets mounted in the A-piller right at the base of the dash.

These should allow the Alpine to see a 4 ohm load so I can use the deck to power the fronts and rears. I am sure that I will eventually buy a 5 channel amp for the system and then complete it with a 10" sub between the captains chairs in the middle row.

I already have a Mopar video system in there with the VCR mounted between the seats in the front . I pulled the plugs on the back for the input and have my sons spare PS2 mounted under the passenger seat connected to that. This has an rf modulator allowing me to broadcast it on 88 something or other.

I don't need opinions on the speakers I am just looking for advice on the speaker locations. Please consider the 3 ponent set or going with coaxial's in either the door or the dash or both.
