The head unit and speakers are 4Ohm, whikle the sub and amp are at 2 Ohm. The amp flashes the protection luight and shuts the sub after the volume gets to a certain point. What can I do, short of buying a new system, to fix this problem? Thanks.

Assuming your amp can handle the 2-ohm load, either your gain is set too high or your system voltage is getting too low.  What's the amp model number and how did you set your gain?

Found the problem, the gain adjustment knob was twisted too far. Thanks for the quick response thoguh.
