installed a new deck on 98 tacoma only hooked up the two front factory speakers, ground wire, switch +, and batt+. two wires were left... one came out of its own harness from the factory deck and was alone in the harness (white with a green stripe) and the other was green with a red stripe. i tested for continuity back to the body as a ground and they were conductive until i turn the dimmer all the way down. tried hooking them together, tried hooking them together to the body, tried grounding each one independantly , and checked fuses. starting to wonder where i went wrong....thought it would be a simple and easy install.... fixed up and repaired an old 99 kenwood kdc-322 and resoldered some old connections in the harness because they had all been pulled out.....only put back in the acc +, batt +, grd, lf+, lf- , rf+, rf- ...... clean and simple... radio works great...but where did i go wrong on the dash lights...

Your sure u didn't blow a fuse? What may have happend is that when u were playin with them 2 wires u may have touched the illumintaion wire to the ground. What i would do is opn the fuse panel and check anything that says lights, if there is nothing in there that looks like the dash/cluster/gauge lights check under the hood for another fuse block, i have ran across radio fuse under the hood..?? i have no idea y they would put it there. Neways once ya get that sorted take the 2 wires and try checkin for 12v+ while the park lights are on. Could also be that one of the two wires left may be grounding out which would cause the dash lights not to turn on. Hope that helps, i will watch this topic incase u need more help ^^

Here is the wiring diagragm for your vehicle.

Sounds like you have cut your factory harness. If you have left enough wire on your factory harness, reconnect it back into your vehicle and take a trip to your local shop and acquire an aftermarket harness for about $10-15. If you cannot, then use the wiring diagram and check all of your connections, and check all of your fuses as stated before. and the green wire IS your illumination wire as per this diagram.
