I am trying to figure out a way to put a CD player right in my Sunbird's dash, allowing me to remove the dam metal braces holding the stock cassette player under the dash (behind the shhh stick).

I dont know mutch about cars, but I found on the net that something like a ?Metra dash-kit? witch would allow me to do so....

Is this right and will I be able to move all ventilation and DC adapter controls out of the way for a CD player? What other options do I have?

I have considered putting the CD player under the dash where the cassette payer is, but I figured (in my little under-car-educated head) that the radio LCD thing in my dash would then be disconnected... If this is not right, how can I connect an aftermarket CD player to the metal thing (i think its an amplifier) inside my dash where the radio LCD and the stock cassette player connects to?

Also, the only place I have found one was on EBay, witch is not so great if I want to make sure it works before buying it.

Mabee its not precise enought, but I don't realy know mutch more radios, so its hard for me to use the right terms....

Very unusual Metra kit , model 89-30-3310 will allow you to mount the CD where the cassette is. Make the job easier by picking up the Metra wire harness too, model 70-1858.

There is no such thing as free installation!

and save yourself a messed up car and fryed wires by bringing it to a certified instalation shop, its worth the $50 install, trusyt me, thats not a car to learn on, its a b!t@h for professionals.

really?? i did many of these with no problems at all....... i mean, it's not as easy as a Sunfire, but still should only take about 30 minutes from start to finish.....

BTW, tcss... don't forget he'll need a 40-GM10 as well

Also, the thing inside your dash is the radio receiver, and you won't be connecting to it. The standard GM wiring harness and antenna is plugged into that receiver, so you'll just unplug them and hook your aftermarket stuff up.

OOOOkkkkk... but do realize that if I unplug my radio reciever, I will have alot of buttons in my dash that wont even have power. Ill just have the Radio LCD thing dead in the middle of my dash, witch is what I wanted to avoid in the first place!

Other than installing an aftermarket FM modulated CD changer, there is no way to have CD capability and still use your factory control panel. The factory metal box is not capable of handling any inputs other than the stock cassette deck and the antenna. If you are absolutely dead set on having a non-functional control panel lighting up in your dash, you can install the aftermarket head unit and keep power and ground(though not speakers) run to the factory hardware.

As far as actually being able to use the dash control panel...it's theoretically possible. However in order to accomplish that, you'd have to basically figure out what signals that control panel sends, figure out what signals the aftermarket head unit's control panel sends, and build your own interface module to convert one set of signals into the other set, since there aren't commercially available interfaces to do that.

Just saved me a bunch of trouble/research tought!

I'll just see what the local "CD Player installer" does with it....... I don't know mutch about cars but if someone would care to tell me exctly what I have to specify when I buy my new CD player to be able to plug it right in to the car's audio thing (the big bunch of cables that feed the car's speakers, I know witch one it is)?
