Brand New Kicker Smells Like Burning!

hi i have bought and just installed a kicker comp vr 15 (2*2ohm 500rms) its installed on 70lt ported box (that was best for my old punch p2) connected to a mono,audison(600rms@4 ohm) in serial mode i turned it on, increased volume of the song called ''get low'' slowly with a great exitement, at the end of the song the volume was 70 percent but the car was smelling awfull!! this smell came from the brand new sub! it wasnt look like burnt, no change in the quality of sound but the smell was terrifiying ok now, everybody says different things, some say change the liter of the box, some says its normal, you need at least 6 hours to get rid of that smell some say you burned the coil what do you think??? please share with us :)

On the original "R" series it was common for a new sub to smell like it was burning, Alpine said it was excess glue around the voice coil burning off and not to worry. I would call Kicker customer service and find out if this is the case.There is no such thing as free installation!

My Kicker L7's always smelled like burnt voice coils after hammering on them for a while. No worries, the smell will go away eventually. Scares the hell out of you at firs though. Now lets see if my Brahma will do it to. Jazzy

I have two MTX 7500's that were display models at circuit city and I still smell them every morning it seems. Love the smell of voice coil in the morning. I hammer mine on a daily basis and I am so used to it I don't really work about this anymore. I would be more worried if it was in a sealed box but with a ported you are smelling it at the source in a way. Remember when it comes to electrical enery or energy in general really it can never be created or destroyed only transformed. They will get hot and they will release a smell that's the way it is. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

um there not blown, the smell is excess glue and it will eventually go away.

As weird as this may seem my brother had these two 12s in a ported box and they started smelling funny like you were describing. He kept the volume up that way for about an hour and they caught on fire more than three times and kept kicking like they were new. Eventually they had it though and bit the dust.

Hey just to give you some more confidence, today is the fourth day since I put the L7 15" back and no more smell at all...
