Head unit stopped working

After working fine for 5 years my Pioneer 7200 HU started losing power erratically. I have a 95 Jeep Cherokee. I also have a JBL amp and 2 12" MTX subs. My friend who wired it did a pretty crappy job and so I checked all the harness wires and they all seemed to have a solid connection. When I put it back in it started working again. A week later it lost power again. This time I checked again and all the wires seemed intact. However this time, as I was putting it back I noticed some smoke coming out briefly from either the HU or the wires. Also a few fuses in my car blew and the HU hasn't powered up since. I replaced all the fuses numerous times but that doesnt help. I also tried hooking up another HU but it wouldnt power up either. Are there fuses in the HU or somewhere else in the car? what else can I check? please help!

There should be fuses under the hood as well as in the passenger compartment, however, if you saw the deck smoking, it's time to replace it.My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.

I checked all the fuses in the car and under the hood and they are all fine. There were relays with the fuses under the hood but I wasn't sure if the relays go bad as well? After I checked I tried hooking up a different HU connecting the power, ground, and amp remote wire and it still wouldn't power up. Also my heater stopped working. What else should I check?

That means the ignition/accessory wire behind the deck has lost power.  If you are unable to find the problem, run a new lead (with an inline fuse) from the ignition harness.  Test for the right wire with a multimeter, and run your jumper.My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.

STOP.  "Smoke" is a sign that something caught fire.  Fire in a car is BAD.  Never replace fuses "numerous times" unless you have found and fixed the problem!  When fuses blow they are doing their job and protecting you from and your car from becoming a molten pile of cinders.

Remove the HU and the butcher wiring job it sounds like you have (I bet someone cut off your factory wiring harness, right?  Foolish foolish foolish.)  Check every wire very carefully for damage.  Get the factory wiring diagram and make sure they all still function as they are supposed to.  Throw away your HU and buy a new one, and have it installed by a pro.
