I've made some changes to my system since I last outlined it here. I'm now running proper 4ohm versions of the drivers I had in 8ohms. I also changed to a 1" Tang Band tweeter with a published frequency response low enough to meet the large 7" Daytons. I also changed to an Eclipse XA2000 to run the system, and just recently decided to throw the Eclipse 3122 in my trunk as well to bi-amp things and let the XA just handle the woofers while the 3122 does the highs. (Just like the 3122 used to be wired before I acquired it from haemphyst. 96 Mazda Miata System Update -- posted image.)
The result is 320W of RMS power driving two woofers and tweeters that all told were only meant for a total of 220W RMS. And man does it sound good. I thought just the XA was good enough at 200W, but adding in the smaller 3122 to allow it to just handle the lows makes things even better. It's actually amazing that volumes and bass kicks that used to make the woofers bottom out (96 Mazda Miata System Update -- posted image.) when only the XA was powering everything, now no longer do. Seems that adding in even more power to the system gave the amps more control over the drivers, causing less hair-raising high volume mishaps.
I also had to move the tweeter from the stock location because the new Tang Band has a deep rear chamber. I actually ended up slipping the tweeters in behind the stock woofer grills. Since the large woofers needed to be sunk back into the door and down a bit for clearance of various parts in the door, it actually made a perfect spot to put the tweeters, sandwiched right in front of the woofers, just mounted to the door panel, between the woofer and the grill. So now I have driver spacing like a coaxial speaker, but with bi-amping and a real crossover. So, basically, it's the best sound I've ever heard come from behind stock speaker grills, which is what I've always been after.
