95 taurus factory jbl amplifier

I have a 95 Taurus SHO that came with a factory JBL system. Recently the Sub has stopped working. When I turn the bass all the way up on the stereo, the Sub is silent, and unplugging the amp makes no difference in sound. Is it possible to just replace the factory JBL amp with another? Or does the whole stereo need to be changed? If I can replace it, any suggestions on where to pick one up. I am being told that the factory amp has too high of a current and I would burn any aftermarket amps out.

His point is well taken, factory stuff sucks, but if you aren't willing to go the whole way, replacing the facotry amp may be most economical and easiest route. You may be able to locate an amp from a wrecking yard at a much more reasonable price, too.
