I have the option of getting 2-12" mtx 7500 subs(newer line) or 212"-mtx 8000 sub(older version).  They both are rated at 400 watts rms.  Does anyone have any input as to which one would sound better.  I can get the 8000 subs for about 15% cheaper than the 7500.  Thanks.....

I have owned both, and I can say that the 7500's in a ported box were very loud. The 8000's I had constantly blew. I didn't care for the output on them cmpared to the 7500's. Neither of these subs are great sq subs though. I believe the 8000's work better in a sealed enclosure.

Absolutely, the 7500 is a far superior woofer to the 8000.
If the dust caps werent falling off the tinsel leads were breaking, the 8000's had problems, was not a good woofer.

Thanks guys, just curious how do you know if a sub would sound better in a sealed or ported box?  The manufacturer gives specs for both enclosures.  Is there another detail included in the specs that lets you know if the sub will sound better in a specific enclosure? i.e. ported vs sealed  Thanks..

Answer:  The EBP.  From Guide: Using WinISD,  "As you look at the 'New project...' dialogue box, and click through where it asks you how many drivers you're using, you'll get to a part called 'Box type'.  It has already calculated the EBP (see it shown?) and decided whether this woofer is best in sealed or vented.  Then it made the most logical conclusion of what type of alignment (Q) based on the flatness of the response."

The parameters you would look at are listed as Fs and Qes.  The calculation is Fs / Qes to find EBP.  EBP of 50ish and the rare ones below 50 are best in sealed.  High 60's and above are best in ported.  And you have that middle ground gray area in the high 50's and low 60's where you can probably use it either way without too much compromise.

That's always the first thing I do when I help someone out with their sub building project.  I look at the parameters and do that calculation.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
