need advice on choosing an amp

So i have a 15' kicker sub and i need a new amp. im planning to upgrade my sub in the new future but i want to get an amp first because im using this really weak one. I just need some advice on what to get, like what would be the smartest buy if im planning to upgrade. im thinking of getting 2 12 JLs that are a little bit more on the higher end. Some people tell me to buy the subs first? either way, lets assume i have the JLs what would be the best amp to pull them?

my bad for not condensing this into 1 post. but any ways so i want to know when im choosing an amp, do i want the rms wattage? or peak? like if my subs are like 750 w rms, that would mean i should get something with 1000 w rms? so two subs means 2 amps? whats a smarter buy, im not doing competition or anything but i want the best quality i can afford that wont get played out in a year or two

Always look at the rms ratings of your equipment. Peak power is how much your amp/sub can put out/handle for just a very short amount of time. You wont necessarily need two amps for 2 subs, it all depends on the wiring scheme you choose. Monoblocks, or one channel amplifiers, are generally used to power more than one sub. Model numbers would help.

Quick question, for rule of thumb: if you've got 2 subs@400 wrms wired @ 1ohm ea, so that the amp "sees" 2 ohm, then with an amp of 900 w rms would be kosher?

mrarff, that should be ok, depending on how you have everything wired and your gains are set properly. model numbers would probably help here too.

It really come down to how much do you want to spend not all amps are made equal. Many of them I don't want to say lie but streach the truth on there numbers. Example 100 w. rms Audiobahhh, vs. 100 w. rms Eclipse amp. Same RMS power right....Well not really the Eclipse will give you all of the power you paid for. How ever it dose cost more, bottom line you get what you pay for with amps.

I will agree with the statement. You get what you pay for. Save up for a higher quality and you will be happier with the results you get.
