I have extensively looked online for any modding/******* to the navigation dvds for the  popular Pioneer Avic series navigation systems but I have found none.

I have successfully changed the boot image though.  I have done this by making a iso image of the dvd on my hard drive and then using a iso editing tool like Ultraiso 7 ME to pluck out the BGOPEN.JPG default bootscreen file and then replacing it with a custom one that has the same name and resolution size of 500x240.  I then reburn the dvd on a dual layer dvd, reboot the nav system with the new disc inserted (press reset) and poof!  my bootscreen is no longer saying Pioneer, but looks like this :

I am also going to try to replace the default background images,do some performace gauges customization, and insert some new alarm sounds into my nav dvd.

What I would like to really do is strip the maps off of the N2 DVD and try to and I have to say *try* to insert them onto a N1 firmware Nav DVD so that we can have the best of both worlds (updated maps and still not suffer from the movie lockout while in motion) Any donations of copies of the N2 DVD's would surely be appreciated.

If anyone has any more tricks, please share them.

Pete

I just made my default customized performance screen.  It's kinda basic, but of course its just a test of what is capable in this Nav modding.

Now if I could just figure out how to make this N-1 read mp3 encoded data DVD's.  Anyone try this yet?  That would be bling bling baller to have a dual layer dvd with over 8 gigs of your favorite mp3's, eh?

I'm gonna try a crystal clear version of this to see if I can see the wallpaper image behind the face of this template.

One can overcome the movie lockout with the N2, but I have an N1 and for N1 owners, there is no bypass that I am aware of that allows us a way around when we load a updated N2 firmware map dvd.

**UPDATE**  Important information:

How would you like to make copies of your map DVD's with just a single layer dvd instead of a dual layer dvd?

This is done by removing all of the point of interest (POI) crap that most of us do not use.  There is almost 4 gigs of this stuff on the original disc.

I just did it and I stored it to a dvdrw and it works perfectly!  Address routing is not affected either. (unless its a POI and you are searching for a POI name to match an address, duh)

Once again it does require two software packages and a knowledge of iso file parsing (reading)

You need:

1. UltraIso 7

2. Nero (or some other dvd finalizing software that accepts the .iso file extension.)

3. You have to have at least 8 gigs or so free room on your hard drive...

open Ultraiso and make an ISO of the Map DVD you would like to backup on your hard drive.

after that is done, go for a look a folder in the iso that you saved called "IDX"

I removed the following files without adversly affecting my settings here in Iowa nor does it error out the nav system, it just blanks out that portion of features on the choices on the POI menu.

Here they are:

POIDT004.IDX

POIDT043.IDX

POISR201.IDX through POISR207.IDX

and that strips off 2.47 gigs of stuff that is not needed for standard ops.

I then saved the modified ISO and then burned it using Nero.

Just as a note-  I suffered some errors trying to burn the disc from Ultraiso, so just save it and open Nero seperately to burn the image.

please give it a try and let me know how it works for you!

Now if I could only figure out  how to play mp3's from a DVD on this thing!

Wow, I need to go out and get myself some DL DVD's and start messing with this stuff! I was going to backup the DVD's but haven't gotten around to it! I wish someone would put the latest edition DVD's on the Torrent network because I don't want to pay a lot of money for the damn things through Pioneer. I heard they're supposed to send you the new ones free but I haven't recieved mine. Just a lot of addresses and roads the old ones don't know....

**Update**  I have found that some routing and addressess cannot be found after removing some of those files.  I will have to poke around and probably end up removing the other languages from the disc to make it fit.  I found spanish and french (for Canada) on the disc.

Thanks for the ideas! I have a D1 and wanted to mess around with the DVD as well. I can see some interesting stuff on there. I would like to replace the intro screen and backgrounds as well, as they are not uploadable on the D1. Also, there are a lot of XM logos missing, and no one knows if they are on the DVD or coming over the air, so I will try to copy some known logos into the missing ones as an experiment.
Good excuse to get that Dual Layer burner - they are only like $60 now, so why not have some fun?
