Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone can  tell me what this sounds like. I have factory door locks in my 1998 Honda Civic and it seems the Door Locks only work when they want to. I checked all fuses. Could it be a Relay or something else? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Oh yeah all the door locks do the same thing. It isn't just one door so I'm pretty sure its not the actuaters unless they all went bad at the same time.

What ACTUALLY happens?
With key?
Does it happen with a remote?
Does it happen when you lock them manually from inside the vehicle?
Is this tied in to an alarm?

There was no alarm in it and the only switch on the drivers door seems to work only when it wants to. I took an old alarm out that I had and it did the same thing. So it can't be the alarm. Funny thing though I put in a new alarm and it works just like the old one. The switches and the remote only work when they want to. I know for a fact it can't be the alarm because both alarms do the same exact thing. So when you play with the switches it doesn't work. You wait a few minutes go back and try them and they work. Same thing with remotes.

Sounds like the white relay in the driver's door. Probably water damage, it can be replaced with two regular relays or a DEI 451.

Howard i don't know if you've noticed this, but on this generation civic the lock box always seems to have that problem, and of 75% of the times i've troubleshooted them the factory power wire to the lock control unit was the culprit i just had to re-run a fresh power cord, not saying it's the op's problem, but just giving my two cents.

You're probably right, I only noticed this when I was installing alarms and couldn't trigger the locking, prelude and Civic, bet it's the constant feed where it goes through the door tube, OR a corroded molex plug.

i would lean with the corroded molex plug, i had a problem recently with a civic i did of that generation, problem i encountered was that the windows wouldn't work after I fitted an actuator to the driver door, and for the life of me i couldn't figure out the problem, turned out the ground to the driver's controls was corroded so the windows were only getting a positive feed.

Yes I've NEVER had a cable go in a Japanese door tube, as for French cars it's the first thing to look at when a piece of door furniture fails.
