Vehicle: 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan (Black key: No transponder)
Remote Start Unit: Autopage C3 –RS-730
Hello to all Guru's out there,
I am brand new to this website as well as the job I am doing here.
I am a trying to do a first time remote starter installation on my friend’s 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan. First of all I thought it was simple as tapping in the right wires from remote start unit to the harnesses in the car.
After doing reading on the12volt.com for couple of days I have found lots of stuff about wiring like grounding 2nd starter wire through resistor, using relays, etc.
Could someone help me where to start from ?
I only need to have lock, unlock, and remote start feature of the system working. No need for shock sensor, siren, etc.
Below is my understanding so far:
This is the link to installation manual
http://carmedia1.com/pdf/RS730LCD.pdf
1.     I need to wire H1 (6 pin heavy gauge wire harness) like on this link.
https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/file.asp?ID=676
2.     I need to wire H4 (3 pin door connector) like on this link https://www.the12volt.com/relays/relaydiagram38.html
3.     I need to buy 180/2K/5.3K resistors, diodes, SPDT relay.
4.      What wires do I need and what wires do I not need for my purpose?
I probably have not provided enough information here, please let me know what else do I need to mention.
My experience is : I have been fixing cars for few years and done few car audio installation, very basic keyless entry, worked with Megasquirt and stuff but the remote start is new to me. Lots of mechanical but not much of electronics. I am more familiar with older Japanese cars (I don’t know if that makes big difference).
I could have had someone do this but I want to do it myself and learn.
So please help guide me through this. If someone has documentation on same car/ same unit, it would be nice.
Thanks
-Shizen

Looks like you have done some good research.  Your info looks accurate.  I am not familiar with the AutoPage unit but...

The diode needed is a 1N4001 or !N4004 or 1N4007.  For the resistors, 1/4 watt +-5% are OK.  Standard 30/40A SPDT relays are required.  All connections should be soldered and insulated with heat shrink tube where possible and Scotch Super 33+ tape at other points.  Radio Shack will have the resistors and the diode.  Relays will be a little harder to find.  EBay is a source but get ones with the 5 wires harness included.

Bulldog Security has the wiring info plus diagrams of the Starter2 relay, Door Locks relays and the Parking Light relay.  Here is a link :

http://www.bulldogsecurity.com/bdnew/vehiclewiringdiagrams.asp

I will look at the AutoPage install guide to assist in it's setup and config...  but there might be an AutoPage person on the forum to add specifics

Soldering is fun!

The Caravan is fairly straight forward but has a few twists.

The door lock system is a one wire system.  Follow the top diagram from this Bulldog diagram :

http://www.bulldogsecurity.com/diagrams/extrainfo/diagrams/29358_CARAVAN_CHRYSLER%20MINI%20VAN%2001%20-%20UP%201%20WIRE%20JBS%20UNITS.pdf
Additionally, due to the +- lock output from the AutoPage unit, you might want to add a diode to each output, band towards the AutoPage
brain.

The Caravans parking light circuit is a MUX circuit.  Leave the H5 RED / White wire connected to +12v.  Follow the Bulldog

diagram on the right :  http://www.bulldogsecurity.com/diagrams/extrainfo/diagrams/26500_CARAVAN_CHRYSLER%20PARKING%20LIGHT%20DIAGRAM.pdf  Use a 2K resistor.

For the Second Starter wire, follow this diagram : http://www.bulldogsecurity.com/diagrams/extrainfo/diagrams/17044_CARAVAN_CHRYSLER%20MINI%20VAN%20STARTER%202%20DIAGRAM.pdf

I would modify that diagram by connecting the Relay Pin 85 to AutoPage H6 Gray/Black wire ( Pin2) and Relay Pin 86
to AutoPage IGN2 Output H1 Pink wire.

More info on resistors :  Radio Shack usually has the more common values in stock.  However 5.3k or even 2k might

be hard to find.  You can create these values.  A series or 2 or more resistors will ADD together to create the necessary
value.  Two 1k resistors in series will create a 2k resistor.  A 4.7K and a 560 ohm will get you real close to the 5.3k
value needed for the door lock.  Always verify with a DMM.

Other AutoPage wires to connect:

H5 Black System Ground to chassis ground

H6/6 BROWN / White Horn to PURPLE / Green (-) Horn @ steering column
H6/8 BLACK/ White Neutral Safety to Parking Brake switch or chassis ground. Do safety test to ensure car can not be started in gear.
H6/10 WHITE/ Red Tach to Blue/Green @ coil pack.
H6/17 WHITE/ Violet Brake to WHITE/ Tan and brake pedal switch
H6/19 WHITE/ Black to hood pin switch

If the caravan has the factory alarm, connect H6/3 Pink wire to PURPLE / Light Blue thru relay and 9K resistor.

If the caravan has power sliding door(s), connect H6/15 Gray wire to PURPLE / Blue with relay and appropriate resistor for door controlled.

No alarm trigger wires are included other than the mandatory hood pin for remote start shutdown.  This should get the locks and remote start working.  There will still be some AutoPage setup and programming necessary.  Read the install guide for Tach Learn, etc.

Wow Kreg, Thanks a lot for all these information.
I am still working to finish reading.
BTW, I noticed last night AutoPage unit came with a SPDT relay + connector w/pigtail including diode jumped across pin85 and pin86 with band on pin85 side on connector. I will try to upload pictures.
Is this already preworked to be used ?
Thanks,
Shizen

Yes, probably for an optional Starter Kill circuit.  See page 13 of the install guide.

I see, it is for starter circuit.
I don't get to work on this vehicle till next 10 days or so.
By the way, how long do you think it will take to finish the job ?
I am pretty handy with soldering, finding wires, taking panels off, etc.
Considering, I already made 1st attempt (when I didn't know much about it) and saw where BCM and related wires are located, hoping to get it done in a day.
Thanks for your support Kreg.

Figure on about 5 hours, start to finish.  You will probably be done sooner.

That includes vehicle disassembly; locate & verify all wires; position brain; route, trim to length, solder & insulate wires; program and test; neaten up with wire looms and tie wraps; re-assemble and final test.  Spend time locating a good place in the firewall to pass the Power, Tach and Hood Pin wires thru.  Try to use an existing grommet and apply silicone sealant if required.  Those wires going into the engine compartment need special placement to ensure they are away from heat and movement.

I would pre-wire and set up the necessary relays.  Making those connections "on the bench" is easier than under the dash.  Unused wires can be bundled or trimmed and neatly tied up.

Have your wire listing guides printed out, all compared and highlighted.

Also be familiar with the AutoPage unit & manual and its install sequence.  Some remote start units need to have the remotes programmed first, then use the remotes to set any necessary programming options / features, then a Tach learn, then a remote start.  Some units use the Parking Lights and horn to aid in programming.

As always, preparation is the key.  Here is a picture of most of the items you should have at the ready.
