Installed a Valet 562t in a 2003 ford explorer using a 556u. The problem I am having is when the remote start is activated the ignition turns on then the starter screeches (grinds) real quick and then shuts down. It does this each time in the 3 effort cycle. This only happens once in a while. This is installed on a buddies vehicle and he claims this only happens in warmer weather meaning 40deg + which I find odd. I relearned the tach a couple weeks ago. But he says its happening again know. Any suggestions? Im thinking about removing the 556u and replacing it with the xk05.

Are there any flashes on the LED to indicate a shutdown code?  If a key is placed in the ignition switch will it remote start?  Possible immoblized issue.  Are the connections soldered or scotchlocked?

All connections are soldered. I have yet to check the led for flash codes. And no at the time I did not put a key in the ignition and try it that way either. When the problem actually occured for me to be present and hear it for myself it didn't sound like it cranked long enough. So my first instinct was to make sure it was in tach mode and to relearn the tach. I did just that and everything was working fine so I left it as that. Its been a couple weeks and know the problem is back. I will be going to work on it sometime later this week. Didn't know if anyone else has had this problem or had any suggestions to cut down my trouble shooting time. My next thought is the 556u antenna location around cylinder. If its moving or has moved would that cause it to do soothing like this?

I had done an explorer of that generation recently and the starter motor wasn't disengaging, it was dragging just like you said. I was using the blue/green wire fore tach at the coil pack. I then tried the pink/white at the coil also. I have used these wires in the past with other remote starter brands and had no problem, This explorer was getting a Avital 4103. The Avital(same parent company as Valet), didn't like the signal from the coil. I changed my tach wire over to an odd wire at the fuel injector and reprogrammed, worked perfect! I finished the car in under an hour and it took me another 1 hour trouble shooting the damn tach. I just couldn't believe that the same wires I used in the past wouldn't work on this install. After I got it working, I remembered reading here on previous posts Ford= Fuel Injector and Chrysler=Coil. This must be a popular phrase for DEI users...
The front passengers side fuel injector will be the easiest to grab.

Thanks flobee4, I will try changing tach to injector wire and see if it helps. I will let you know!

Another thing to try is to start it up and then bring the RPM's up just slightly before programming tach. I have seen some fords in the past that idled almost too low of an RPM so the r/s would see the tach signal and shut down before the vehicle was actually running. Not sure if it will help in this case, but it might be worth trying if changing the tach wire doesn't fix it.

Thanks offroadzj, that's what I thought when I relearned the tach a couple weeks ago. So that's what I tried. I let the rpms rest then relearned the tach... I will have a chance here in a couple days to work on this vehicle. First I will try switching tach to to an injector wire. If that doesn't work I will then probably just switch it to voltage sense and adjust the crank time accordingly. I don't like hooking them up that way. I would rather use tach but that should help diagnosis if the problem is in the tach or not?

The antenna for the 556u could be an  issue and give you these results. When you activate the remote start, watch the security light on the dash. If it flashes the antenna needs adjusted. I f not then its not the 556u. However, an XK05 would be a more reliable option.

i have an 01 ford ranger that used to have a viper remote start and i always kept the "engine checking" feature off. this is the setting that basically negates using any form of voltage or tach wire connection and i have never had a problem with the starter at all. the only downfall of this setting is that if the car fails to start on the first try then it wont try to start again afterwards.
