When tach wire connection is needed to start.

Is it the car is it the RS itself?

I didn't have to install on my 05 Colorado with Bulldog deluxe 500.

Depends.  Some remote starter units will only work in Tach Mode.  They don't have a TachLess Mode or VirtualTach Mode.  ( older Ultra Start units )

Some vehicles have "one-touch-starting", where you can briefly rotate the key to Start and then quickly back to Run and the vehicles computer will continue cranking the starter motor long enough to start the engine ( like your Colorado ).

Some R/S units also monitor the Tach signal for an engine over-rev condition and will shut a remote start down if that happens.

Soldering is fun!
