I recently had my battery changed on my ford explorer 1998 sport. Whatever the guy did to the factory alarm is giving me lots of problems. I need to know how to reset it and reactivate it. I am sure that little button on the dash as well as the one under the steering column does something. But I have no idea how to get tit to operate properly. I did get it to start by holding the button under the dash and turning the key but then it goes back to being crazy again. Please help me with step by step directions on how to get it back to where it was before the battery was changed. This has to be a simple valet switching problem.

As I said I can lock and unlock the doors but the alarm is not on I think. I should not have to keep reaching under the dash and hold down a button to start my car. It was fine for nearly 20 years but the guy at the station either stuck it in valet mode or the alarm itself needs to be reset. Doors lock, but engine will not start unless I hold the button under the dash down. And with that I have a button with a red light on the consoled so I have no idea which button does what. My problem described was pretty straight forward. I still need to know how to get it c\back to the original settings.

Are you sure its a factory alarm? Looking in my wiring diagrams, I don't see anything related to a valet switch/button. Perhaps its dealer installed?
For what its worth, in your original post, you made no mention of locking and unlocking the doors. You only said that your alarm is "being crazy", and you needed to push a button to start the car.
