Single Use Switch/Relay

Hi, I'm looking for a way to set up a momentary push button switch so that it connects to ground when pressed once, then disconnects once it sees 12v+, only to be activated again by pressing the switch. I'm thinking that I will need to use a latching relay (or multiple relays) to make it work. Any idea on how I would do this? To give you a little background, I've got an old Python 990 remote start/keyless/alarm in my farm truck. It's a 2001 ford ranger with a manual transmission. Currently, I have the neutral safety wire grounded and it works fine. I don't park it in gear and it does not leave the farm. However, there are some hilly areas where it's wise to park it in gear. Also, I don't use the remote start feature often so it would be nice to have it disabled unless I press the button I describe above. The button is the best idea I have come up with. I have fiddled around with a DIY neutral safety switch but nothing has worked or worked reliably. Thanks!

Anyone that might be able to point me in the right direction? Perhaps another forum on the 12 volt, or another forum all together?

What you described can be done easily, but I can't help you because of the remote starter you're using on your truck, whether it leaves the farm or not. Please use a remote starter designed for safe use on a manual transmission vehicle. the12volt • Support the12volt.com

Why not just use a standard toggle switch on the NSS? When you want to use it flip the switch up, when you don't want to use it flip the switch down.Kevin Pierson

That's actually how I have it now, a little switch mounted above the clutch pedal. The idea behind the self-resetting button is so that I don't have to remember to turn it back off. I think I've got it figured out though. Keep in mind that that is an electronically latching relay. If you "latch" the relay it will stay energized until you unlatch it. While latched it will most likely pull a significant amount of current. Anything over 50mA will be bad for the battery unless you drive the vehicle on a regular basis.Kevin Pierson

Aw man, great point. I didn't consider that, as I was stuck on the fact that it was a ground wire that I'm looking to control with the relay. I forgot about the relay itself. Well, I've just received the relay and I ordered a timed relay and some other bits and pieces. Once I get it all on the bench I will figure something out. I'm definitely going to spend more time than its worth with this, but I enjoy tinkering.
