I finally have the money to do this, and i wanted some advice on which i should get.  I like the smaller size and temp/time control on the hornet, but i hear that the viper has better range, and i've heard that the vipers have  better build quality.  I want to use my remote to roll my windows up/down, raise my tonneau cover up/down, and maybe do something else.  I will most likely buy the alarm/remote start on ebay, and i will be installing it myself (which will be a first for me.)  I don't know much about the Autopage except that the've been doing pager alarms for quite some time now, and they have like 8 buttons on their remote, which may make it easier to control my auxillary accessories.  What do you think?  Oh, by the way, my vehicle is a 1999 Dodge Ram w/keyless entry.  (any tips for that vehicle?)   thank you ever so much, Mike

Well I just installed a Viper 790xv today on my 2000 Hyundai Elantra. It went in pretty smooth considering I already had a full featured Alarm/Starter from Bulldog in it and all the wires were located before. I just wanted better range and visual confirmation.

I also was researching the difference between the Hornet piece and the Responders. I came to the conclusion that they both use identical parts and brains...even the harnesses are the same. That goes for the Python 880xp and the Cifford RS3 Responders also. The difference is the antenna system so the Responder pages further. It doesn't seem to transmit more than about 1500 feet but it recieves the paging signal up to a mile away. I honestly thought that it would transmit as far as it recieves. Truth be told if I would have known that beforehand, I would have gone with the new hornet piece. It's in now though so it stays. 554t, 790xv, or RS730LCD -- posted image. I like the looks of the hornet remote better and the clock/timer feature is kinda cool. Plus you get a backup remote. Viper remotes cost 90-100 bucks to replace or to have a spare for the wife. Vipers also have no warranty if not installed by a DEI dealer. Hornet still warranties defects on product if you install it yourself. I wouldn't get that particular unit on ebay though. I noticed they have been pretty overpriced. I found it pretty cheap here: http://store.autotoys.com/cgi-bin/wfp53024.storefront/EN/Product/ALARM554

It's listed as DEI 554 ALARM AND REMOTE START on http://autotoys.com if that link doesn't work. Just click SHOP NOW then do a search. It's 168.95 and free shipping if you use Paypal. Plus they give you 10.00 bucks back on 1st order and free strippers on orders over 150.00 if you look in the coupons section. By the way if this is your first install, you are pretty daring to be putting in advanced units like these. I hope you have lots of patience. NO TECH SUPPORT FOR VIPER UNIT UNLESS YOUR AN AUTHORIZED DEI DEALER. That sucks so if I were you I'd tackle the Hornet piece. Atleast they will offer support if you run into troubles.

Well that's just some of the info I came up with during my research, hope it allows you to make an informed decision. If you run into troubles..you can always come back to the 12volt for help.

wow that's a great price - thanks, man.  they will be willing to deal with me being that i am just doing it for myself?  and Hornet will help too?  that would be great.  question though - the new autopage alarm or marksman M10 - same thing-  has a "tap the winshield to page the remote" feature, so that a passenger can let me know that they (or my car) need me.  Does the hornet have something like this?  Also, does the hornet's brain have a temp. sensor built in, or is that a seperate sensor i'd have to buy.  thanks again for all help,

mike

i installed the 750LCD and love it, the temp sensor and pager function were NOT add on's they came standard. And the range is incredible. I have an avital R/S and thought the 50ft or so was pretty good;but  the 750 I have started from inside a movie theater, about 100 feet from the door. I am very happy with the 750 and will probably change out the aviatal for one soon. And i like all the functions of the LCD remote. The clock, timer, page function, the status feature, and especially the temp sensor, people cant believe you can check the internal temp of my truck.. anyways thats my .02 on the RS750lcd....later all

This unit appears to have quite a few outputs and options also.

This one from UltraStart is pretty cool also.

The Marksman M10 is on that site also. I don't know what kind of prices you've seen. I've never used that 750LCD unit, so I can't help you there. From talking to most of the pros in this forum though...they always have good things to say about Directed Electronics. They make the Viper and the Hornet. Let us know what you end up picking.
