Hi
I recently had my Chevy dealer call and want to know if I knew anything about the Remote Start prepped package on the Chevy trucks. I knew that such a thing exists but have never seen one or how much is really ready for a R/S install. My guess is that yeah, it's prepped at the BCM and that's it. Simply buy a new BCM or a plug in module to it and you have instant R/S and hand the customer a new set of remotes. The dealership didn't tell me how much the part was or give me any information. I quoted them $300 for an aftermarket R/S. GM's part is probably cheaper than that. Anybody have any more info on such a thing?
Thanks
Jon

Many of GM's current vehicles are remote starter ready. If you need to know, check the option code label in the vehicle to see if it has option code AP8. If it does, it is remote starter ready. All this means is you can upgrade the factory keyless entry to one that has the remote start option. The kit includes two new remotes and can only be set up by qualified dealers. It must be enabled through software from GM. The aftermarket units offer better range and will work many times. The factory is only good for 198 feet and two times before the vehicle must be started with the key.

If it has the prep package, all you need is new remotes and to turn it on through the BCM. The dealer will have to call GM headquarters to obtain a code (this is the part that cuts us out of the loop) and update the software. Price is usually within $200 - 400. I believe the accessory package itself for the two remotes is around $200.
The prep/convenience package is basically a hoodpin and extended range keyless entry.
The days of sub-hour silverado remote start installs are gone, for us anyways. Many new GM models have the remote start standard already from the factory, and most remaining have the prep package already. Some of the base models don't have it or it isn't available/offered so we can still do those.
We do dealer work and a lot of the dealers have caught on to how easy it is, and we've seen a HUGE drop off in GM r/s sales. (anyone else?) As you found out some are still clueless as to how it works.
Of course there is still some room for an upsell. For the vehicles already equipped with the R/S trilogix makes an add on which provides new two-way confirming remotes, and extends the range. Not sure on the price offhand.
--- SOME OTHER RANDOM OFF TOPIC ---
- Also a heads up some of the new ford/lincoln/mercury can be ordered from ford with the remote start. It is still a dealer installed item, but it is factory invoiced meaning it comes listed on the window sticker. Off the truck the vehicle will have a box on the seat and the dealer will install (or outsource) the installation of the R/S. Lists for $385 on the sticker and takes about 45 - 1 hour to install the basic system. Still made by Code Alarm, same remote as the CA-420. We are seeing a lot of Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealers doing these in house now.
- Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge still offers the dealer installed (or outsourced) Mopar basic remote starts. Also made by Code Alarm and the same remote as the CA-420. Again a few dealers are doing these in house as well.
- Lincoln is making sirius standard on all models for it's 2008 model year, with a 6 month pre-paid subscription.
- All new 2008 Chrysler Town & Country to be the first to offer Sirius VIDEO.
- Chrysler to install sirius radio (one year included) in 70% of it's 2008 models, with it being standard on many premium and midlevel vehicles.

Good thing is that I've recently worked with DEI reps and have seen models that control the factory remote start function .  Just like NowYaKnow metioned, trilogix makes kits that control the system but DEI makes the SST models that control them through the 1900g kit that not only gives two way capability but up to 1 mile range.  Pretty soon they should also control the ones made from other vehicle manufacturer.  The days where real installers were needed to perform these installs are coming to an end due to the data integration.  Sooner then later any 'kid" can perform these installs in a matter of minutes.
