Being working on this since the 5900 came out months ago and still have not been able to get it working.
Car is an 06 Audi A3 2.0T full can, just like the new Jettas.
Alarm is the Viper 5900
trying to use either the sl2 or can 1
AT the time I started this project the performance shop I own was in with a car stereo/alarm shop so I was working with him and the regional DEI supplier to get this installed.
I have tried both the Can1 module and the crimestopper/fortrin can-sl2 and I cannot get either to work.
Remote start aside since its a manual and I will be going back to that later now that the 689m is out in the US.
Plugging the can1 I get no errors till I turn the ignition on, seems to be at the third step of the initialization.
Pluging in the Sl2 I can what appears to be full communication.
If I have the 5900 attached to either module before I could get it to responsed based on the LED. But would not talk over the can to perform any vehicle functions. Factory remote would not activate the 5900 or deactive it like it should have through the can. So basically not working properly.
Now 6 months later when I have moved and have time again but no help, tried to get working on it again since I am trying to finalize my car puter and I really want to use one of the output channels to be able to turn on the computer for remote desktop use to move files around.
I can go in and out of valet mode and program mode but no response from any buttons on the remote it seems. I get a transmit and receive signal on the remote screen but the screen does not show locked and the led never starts to flash when I arm it.
the can1 module I have seems to be revision 5K which may seem to be an issue looking at some information I have found. but the first two stages of initialization seem to be ok which would be compatibility to the car as not until I turn the ignition on does it throw the red light on.
The Sl2 seems to program but the instructions list nothing about the LED staying on or staying off if there is an error. just says will flash and then go off and its done. Which is what it does. But nothing.
also it has never been made clear if this will work as the bypass for the remote start. I see nothing in the documentation from dei or crimestopper about it. but others have said it does, others have said it doesn't. I am a certified Audi tech (just not working there anymore), former VW tech and ASE certified in electrical so this is not stuff I don't understand. But knowing the immo systems in tehse cars I don't fully understand how the can modules would by pass the immo unless they send an all ok signal across the can or something, is that what its doing? or will I still need some sort of bypass?
Thanks for any help chris

I am surprised that the DEI rep couldn't help you but thats besides the point.  The CAN-SL2 will NOT bypass the factory immobilizer for Audi and German vehicles alike.  It is suppose to give you the alarm outputs needed for the 5900.  This install should be extremely simple since you just have to match connections.  The Can High and Low wires you need are ORANGE / green for High and ORANGE / brown for Low.  They are twisted wires that could be found at the kick panel.  As soon as you do that then you hold the program button and then plug in the middle plug to start powering up the module and let go of the programming button.  After that you make your other connections and turn the key to the on position.  This should make the LED flash rapidly and it should be programmed.

Make sure that the CAN-SL2 version is new enough to make sure that the communication is done properly. As long as you have the IGNITION wire attached and the HIGH / LOW CAN wires at the steering column the outputs can be triggered by grounding out the inputs from the CANSL2 module.

Thanks, I'll test later today with the grounding method didn't even think about that, makes perfect sense.
That will at least let me know if the sl2 is working.. the DEI module Ihave no idea what is going wrong.
Still none of that explains why the 5900 is not responding. Or is it waiting for a signal back from say the lock module saying yes in fact it did lock?
If I am looking at the remote and hit lock I see the transmit signal a few seconds later I get the receive signal but it does not show the remote change to locked and the led does not come on. I may hook up the siren, if I even have it with me here, so I have another form of confirmation just for my testing. I don't understand why it is not working all of a sudden, oh well. I'll test the can side of it first.
Thanks for the help.
engine pic for good measure :)

oh also is there a way to check which version of each module is good for what cars.
5k is the can1 module version level
1.4 build 47/06 guessing week/year? is the sl2
can these be updated? I have spent way too much money on non working can modules up to this point.. And way to much overall if you include the 5900
As for the DEI rep when I called from our suppliers shop as if I was working there the person on the phone could not even tell me if it woud work to bypass the immo or not, if I had a version that would work with the A3, or what i'd need to do about getting the firmware update if it wasn't.

thats a nice upgrade but thats only half of the battle. Post up your dyno numbers. Pushing stock internals or what?

That was a shortly before it went back in the car. Finished it on a friday at about 2pm in the afternoon, by 2:40 on was on my way for a 1800mile round trip to my house in NJ and stop off at a show in MD for work... Its only been together for a few weeks now. Not sure if you are familiar with the engine but its direct injection like the new sky redline and the mazdaspeed three. There are larger injectors but none that will handle the capacity that I need right now so I am holding off till I find ones that will as they are 150-200 each and i don't feel like spending that several times. Currently since there is not enough fuel I am not pushing it beyond what it can handle so its still on stock internals, crank and pistons are forged stock and will hold up so I 'll be doing rods see how far I can go on the 10.5:1 CR before getting new pistons and lowering it. Turbo is a 3582R, goal is 600hp with a direct port nitrous setup spraying methanol in place of gasoline. Car is also FWD but is being converted to AWD.
anyway back to my electrical issues.. Just tried the sl2 and grounding the signals for the door locks and it works fine. So I know the can side is working. Now I just need to figure out why the 5900 will not send the signal to the sl2 and then to the car.
Thanks for the suggestions, whole thing had me so frustrated up to this point logic is no longer an option...06 audi a3, viper 5900, sl2, can1 -- posted image.

Ok not sure what changed but it all works now.
I put the 5900 back in with the sl2 and nothing happened. For a little while it was actualy acting as if the ant was unplugged or the brain was not powered up..
I was trying to enter the programming modes in the unit and it would not let me.. clicked the latch closed on the door and it worked. So I knew the sl2 was actually sending a signal to the brain.
got into the program mode fiddled with a efw things trying to get the remote back to default (directions really aren't clear on if you have to press anything for mode one default) But I got it eventually. Remote started showing it was talking to the brain again and locking unlocking.
I first had not hooked up the unlock wire to the sl2 since the output off the 5900 was showing + for unlock when the sl2 was showing it wantd a negative test it and it was going negative so I hooked it up.. 5900 remote now locks and unlocks the car and arms/disarms the factory alarm. just have to package it up all nice now and get my 689m..
I wish I knew what changed that made it work but it does now.. I really wish the can1 was functioning since that will allow arm disarm from the factory remote of the 5900 but I guess I can figure out how to do that without the can module I guess.
