Hi,

I'm new to the forum and the 12 volt world. I now understand the purpose behind attaching a diode across the coil and I would like to take advantage of this new found knowledge .I did a search on the topic but didn't see any posts to answer my peticular question. As far as attaching diodes across the coil of a relay, if your relay has a connecting wire harness/plug, how exactly do you connect/attach the diode?

Thanx in advance for any helpful advice.

I smell...BASS!

can you solder? if so solder the diode's leads to the wires (strip insulation first) for the coil and then heat shrink or tape them.
Prove your connections, use a meter!
I promise, I'll behave!

Thanx electro. I was thinking that there was some super futuristic diode attachment device that I wasn't aware of.

hi,

use a small file to clean the coil terminals of the relay up close next to the case.  use file on its edge and lightly file the outer side of each terminal.  this will make the solder stick to it easier.  bend the leads of the diode at right angles making the width of the leads the same as the distance between the outside edges of the relay terminals.  solder with a small wattage iron (25w or so). trim excess leads and insert in socket.  be sure to pay attention to wiring as relay is now polarity sensitive.

hope tis helps
