i have gone to many local stereo shops here in the So. California area, and have been disappointed to hear that they do not try to integrate or use the OEM SAT antenna for use on an aftermarket SAT tuner or PNP receiver, such as a OEM GM XM antenna on a Sirius Sportster.

using the factory antenna with an aftermarket tuner/receiver, whether this be from the same SAT service, or the competing SAT service, seems like a logical step in car installation with regards to the growing market of Sat users, as the factory antenna will provide the cleanest install, unless the installer is willing to devote time to a hidden antenna within the confines on a third tail-light brake light, or under an engine cowling.

when i suggested this the integration to one installer locally, he said, 'we just cut open the factory coax cable and solder in the included antenna coax.'  which is to say, they damage the OEM antenna lead, then damage the antenna that came with the aftermarket kit. when all you need to do is create a cusom antenna adapter per the factory termination, such as a OEM GM XM single ended FAKRA SMB connection:

Your are absolutly right, is does seem logical and you do not even have to modify any thing.

All you have to do is take off the plastic housing at the tip os the connector and it should fit perfectly into your after market tuner, at least thats what I did!

Always best to use the appropriate connections, I've found splicing to cause alot of loss in signal strength.

thanks for the response guys, appreciate the comments of others in regards to this issue. was fearing it was getting burried after a week of sitting on the board.

true, should the coax lead of the OEM antenna cable be long enough to reach either a tuner or PNP receiver, removing the FAKRA housing will reveal the straight SMB plug within. however, this is impossible if the PNP receiver is mounted up front on the dash, and the factory tuner and antenna lead are in the trunk or under a rear seat:

such as a Pontiac Grand Prix tuner in the trunk with a DUAL FAKRA housing:

i guess the point of the forum post is, if a customer came in and said, 'can i keep the factory antenna if i change over to Sirius?' the answer would be yes, but not because you found a way to make it work, by cutting/splicing/moneky wrenching something together, or, as one shop suggested, 'we just remove the factory antenna from the roof, and hide the antenna that came with the kit in there (how many hours did that take to remove the headliner, run the coax and re-mount the housing and replace the headliner?); but with $100 in shop tools, coax and connectors, with a cost to the customer of only $30 for completed assembly, one can make adapter cables on their own that will integrate with any OEM coax lead, even the dreaded Honda/Acura XM leads that require one to modify before aftermaket tuners will work with it:
