I  did a forum search but the posts were from 06 and some of the links did not work, looking for a DIGITAL voltmeter to put in the car, I have found the Cyberdyne type but the are 2 1/16" mount and I would like to have something smaller, around 1"  or so.

any ideas?

VDO used to have some 1" gauges. I can only remember 1" pressure gauges though. You may want to check with a marine or tractor outlet.
