Is anyone aware of a portable multimeter that will beep when it gets to a preset level, for example, set to dc, it will beep when it sees 12 volts.

Sounds like you want a "Peak Hold" function. Look for that when shopping around. You set the meter to the range you want, then press peak hold. When you get a voltage level that hits the highest possible, it will save it to the display so you can see how high it went.

Maybe he wants an audible indicator, instead of having to look at the display, for quick 12v verification.
