I would like to hardwire my gps by cutting off the cig lighter adapter & hook up to power w/ inline fuse

do they run on 12 volts or is there a converter/ inverter/ transformer or whatever in the adapter?

Unfortunately most of these drop the 12v to between 3.6 and 5 volts so you have to retain the adaptor.  Use an in-line cig lighter socket hard wired and bury the  two behind the dash or in the glove box.

If I were you, I would by a cig splitter from an autoparts store and hack that.  Wire it to the factory cig lighter wiring and hide it in the dash somewhere with the plug for your gps.  That way, the gps adaptor is still usable later.  There's probably some type of transformer inside of them.  I did this with a couple portable XM radio cradle/adaptors and it works out well.

I was hoping not to have the bulk, but this will work, I'll do it.  Thanks!
