i was told to get a 1N914/4148 type diode from radio shack. I have found some on ebay one pack is the 1N914 and the other is 1N4148.

Are these the same diodes? I am wanting to protect a 12vdc system from relay spike.

They are essentially the same diodes. However, I would highly recommend using a 1N4001 diode for your application. The voltage spike from the collapsing coil of a relay can be pretty violent. The 4001 is a 1 amp device, the 4148 or 914 is a very small device. 1N4001 or 1N4007 or any number in between would be suitable for your need.
