Subject: the year of the car
Date Posted: November 30, 2009 at 1:18 PM

Yesterday, a coworker (my brotha from anotha mutha) and I were debating over the correct year of a Silverado I was working on.  The label on the side of the door read 07/06.  So I figured it was a 2006. But than he said that if a car was manufactured beyond six months into the year than it becomes the next years model, or a 2007.  In my opinion, if a car was made in November or December, then I would say it was the next years model.  This is what I was told when I first started installing.  Anyone know for sure, I know its a dumb question...huh huh

I always used September of a general cut off date.  When in doubt, look at the owners manual.  More and more "next year" vechicles are being released earlier and earlier in the year!

Same rule I followed too until GM released the 03 (I think) line in February of 02.

The answer is in the VIN. The tenth "vehicle identification number" character tells the model year. 1988 (J), 1989 (K), 1990 (L), 1991 (M), 1992 (N), 1993 (P), 1994 (R), 1995 (S), 1996 (T), 199 7(V), 1998 (W), 1999 (X), 2000 (Y)------2001(1), 2002 (2), 2003 (3), 2004 (4), 2005 (5), 2006 (6), 2007 (7), 2008 (8)...

Woo, so many different replies. Thanx. Never checked the tenth digit of the vin, that's new. But what happens next year, 2010. So that would be the tenth and eleventh digit right?

The administrator has gone off to buy you a new crystal ball, I was going to be clever and spout off about one look headlamps, etc. and I could tell when, except I didn't read the question properly.
We cheat in the UK, from 2001, in the index number it was 01, then 51, then 02 and 52. Japanese Grey imports are the only vehicles without VIN numbers.

OK, because I just went to the UK site and all we got was the 88v/a at £435, = $600+, so it has to be a new crystal ball for you.

Our administrator needs all the credit for this one.  Until he pointed out that there was some sort of a patern, I had no clue.  I simply did a search for 10th digit of vin.  That came up.  But glad to see we can help some of you.

From this day forward I will refer to the VIN to find the year of the car. (High fives administrator and i am an idiot) Yes! I will never be wrong again.

2010 is going back to letters, so it will be A, 2011 - (B), 2012 - (C) etc.
