I am wiring in an aftermarket fan relay what wire should I tap ignition 1 or 2. The car is a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

What is the difference between the two.

Ignition 1 i guess! Although it makes no real difference! The difference between the two is

Ignition 1- Shows 12 at the on, crank and running positon!

Ignition 2 - Shows 12 at the on position but drops out during crank!

Ingnition one and two should test the same. They should test 12v  on, 12v on durring crank and 12v in the run position. Accesory wirers ussualy will test "off" durring crank. Your 98 eclipse does not have an ingition 2. Only an ing 1, acc, and start.  Your best bet would be to connect to ing 1 which is BLACK/ white. Be sure to fuse the circut to the fan relay.

I would run it to the ACC so the load drops out during cranking.

I am with Kevin on this one.  A fan draws twice as much current at startup than it does once it is turning.  If a car has multiple ignition wires, they all act the same.  The ignition wire is hot with key on and also in the start position.  Accessory wire drops out during start.

Ditto!!

But only twice inrush? I though MUCH higher albeit for a short time (transient).
But with the smallest fans being about 10A and some being 50A, 100A etc total - and since they do not help with starting - the should be off during cranking.

(FYI - I used to help "fire" my car by turning the fan on. It was not coincidental - the transient gave the extra kick to the Ig coil. LOL!)

Only 1 ignition that stays live (hot) during cranking, use a (fused) relay from the battery and trigger it from the ACC, it's safer, bloody great start-up onrush current from fans.
Alternatively, a latching relay from engine run, even safer!

i would use a realy with acc as the trigger and run dedicated power from the battery through the relay.  also fuse the relay, this will be the safest.
