If you have a shop it always nice to have a cert on on wall, I have been doing this for 9 years and most installers would agree, a test cannot give you OJT(On the Job Training) to make you a better installer, put that to use and teach as well to learn from other installers, otherwise its just another frame to collect dust on the wall.

Buy the Car Stereo Cook Book and also get a copy of the M.E.C.P installers test book, both are very useful from basic to advanced applications, yhese are great guides for everyday use as well as getting a certification, I started with these and still use today, hope this helps.

Get the new MECP level one book from online and study the book. Call up MECP and you can challenge the course and take the test at one of their certified testing facilities near you. This way, you get your level 1 MECP and all it took was time and about $ 40

Level 1 is fairly simple. Since you already are familiar with electronics it should be a piece of cake for you.
The level 1 is the beginner / intro level. Some Big Box stores require this cert. before you can work for them.
for the advance cert. you will need to show prof of On The Job experience.
the books said above should be all that you will see on the test.

You most have started 20 years ago! The books you mentioned are so dated that most of the information they have in them are for cars that are rust heaps. Also some people might like alternatives to just reading a book but also not pay thousands of dollars for a hands on school that teach custom techniques that they will never use.
