nj remote start installers read

I was browsing the SEMA Action Network (SAN) site recently and what I came across can potentially affect remote start installers in New Jersey. It seems that there was a bill introduced to the Senate and the General Assembly of New Jersey to make it legal only for licensed locksmiths and factory direct dealers to do any work involving motor vehicle transponders. This bill was filed about a year ago and has been referred to Assembly Regulated Professions Committee for technical review.
Why does this bill concern me and other NJ installers? It has the potential to make it illegal for us to install remote start units on any transponder equipped vehicle. Since transponders are standard options on so many vehicles, this will affect how we do business.
I urge all NJ installers to write their Assemblymen and Senators to oppose this bill. Or at least try to convince them that in its current wording, it will put a lot of their constituents out of a job.

Forgive me for my paranoia or am I just being cynical. The end result is you will have to be licensed and it will cost you about $300 a year for your licence/certification, just like they are trying to do here.

I have been trained to be a locksmith but I am not licensed at this time. While doing my training/certification, I did the research behind the license requirements. In NJ, it requires two years of apprenticeship and references from two licensed locksmiths when submitting the application. That was about 5 years ago and haven't looked into since so I'm not sure if things have changed. It was not a process that anyone can walk in and pay to get the license.
The way that this bill is worded currently, will make it illegal for all remote start installers from working on transponder equipped vehicles since the bypasses do exactly what the law is trying to prevent. The prevention of interrogating and cloning of transponders.
The passing of this bill will also exclude general repair shops from doing any transponder related work, such as, ignition cylinder replacement. I am not sure how this bill will affect programming keys that do not require hardware to program a new key.

The other joke is that any ex-military who's worked on late generation tanks (be US, UK, German, or Israeli, they all share similar electronics) would probably waltz around transponders in seconds.
It's a joke in Europe concerning certain gentleman from Central Europe walking around airport car parks with laptops.
It's all about government control.
