There's a storage compartment in my car I want to keep an iPod in, but it has no holes to run the cable through. So, I plan to make a hole, but I don't want to make one big enough to fit either end of the iPod USB adapter through (too big). Instead, I want to cut the cable in half, drill a small hole the size of the cable, run one half through, then rejoin the cable together.

But, those wires inside the USB cable are TINY - like 24 gauge, with only maybe 10 or 12 strands of wire in them. Soldering those little wires back together seems like it'd be really frustrating.

I thought about using butt connectors...it appears Radio Shack only sells ones that go down to 22 gauge. But, I did find four 22 to 24 gauge ones for sale online for $12.15 shipped.

Any better ideas than that?

find a replacement liner for the compartment from a scrap yard, put the better of two away, drill hole for wire and then slice liner enough so you can pry open to slide connector through, should fall back into place.

Ohhh, good idea...I will have to check to see if this compartment has a liner or not, I can't remember now, but if it does then I may go that route. Thanks
