Two things, first, do all OBD2 readers, display all codes from a vehicle?
Second, is there a good OBD2 reader that works on all new cars?
My car in particular that I am concerned is a 2011 BMW X5 that I want to check the codes as i have an issue with it and want to check the codes myself.

Thanks

Mark

First, no, some will show engine codes, others will show transmission and air bag.

Some, you can buy specific manufacture software and updates as you need.

Use some offshore unit the other day with BMW software, seemed to work good, did engine,  trans and airbags..

Only buy a CAN OBD11 scanner.
Keyword is CAN.

I purchased a CAN Obd2 reader/writer, the Innova 3160b (currently the latest and most expensive of their product line.)

It is a CAN OBDII. However i connected it to my BMW X5. It says cannot connect to my vehicle, as my vehicle is too new? Ive had the vehicle for jsut over a year now and I assume its one year old now!

I called customer support and was asked to call from my car with the device connected. I didnt have a chance to do so yet, but will find out soon. But to date, cant use the device yet!

I think you need an 08+ OBD III CAN reader BMW specific.
Some colleagues have laid out £7000 ($10,500) for diagnostic units and we still can't do Japanese pre 2000!

Amateurs assume, don't test and have problems; pros test first. I am not a free install service.
Read the installation manual, do a search here or online for your vehicle wiring before posting.
