What is a good inexpensive multimeter? I know the Fluke 177's are good. But they are expensive. I have seen the Fluke 177's on ebay. But I'm looking for a good multimeter that won't break the bank.

I have a mix of both Craftsman and Fluke meters. For most automotive tasks my Craftsman meters work great. Very few times have I had to get my Fluke out to measure something in car. When I do, it is a quick changing signal where the speed of the Fluke allows it to measure the signal. Accuracy in a car is not very important when it comes to volt meters - the meter could be 10% off and wouldn't really make a big difference.

I've had the UK sold equivalent to the Craftsman unit for over 10 years. It cost about $30 has 20 amp current reading, great for alarm and draw tests, continuity buzzer etc.
Anything more accurate, I'll borrow a diagnostic reader.

What do you recommend for a craftsman multimeter? One that will do the trick to install a car alarm?

More than adequate, hell I've been using a Snap-On test light for the last few decades,never blown anything up...= experience.

Radio Shack 22-813 about $35.
Craftsman 03482334000 Model # 82334 $49 on sale.
The Craftsman ticks all the buttons for me;
Peak hold.
20 not 10amps current rating.
Auto ranging for convenience.
I would definitely order it with a second set of leads with "bed of nails" clips.
More than adequate for the required tolerances.

I bought my embedded nail alligator clips off of Ebay years ago. They are used in the telecom trade. The ones I got slip on over the top of my meter leads (Radio shack supplied leads that have a retainer clip type deal on them). This is nice as I can use the leads as normal leads or just slip the alligator clips on.
