ac to dc power supply

I just finished building my own work bench in the garage and want to get a AC to DC power supply that can output voltage from 1 - 14.4 volts with at least 10amps. This way I can test out car audio or smaller electronics before installing it.  I'm sure there are pre-made units out there, but I would like to know if anyone has built their own? I wouldn't mind trying this myself. However, I'm not sure what parts I would need to get this setup and ensure the voltage is regulated and has a clean output.

The back of the unit will have a regular black computer power plug that goes into a box, fused, and with a power on/off switch. From there it will convert 120v into any voltage from 1 to 14.4 volts with 10amps. There would be a knob in the front that would control this using a potentiometer (sp?). And I would want an LCD screen that displays the current voltage.  The outputs would allow bare wire to be connected via terminals or some type of connectors.

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe it is a possible DIY project.  The hard part is the 10 Amp requirement.  I made something like that  while ago but did not include a digital readout and it had a 1.5 Amp output limit.  Used a 24 volt AC to DC wall transformer and a LM37T voltage regulator .  The output was adjustable between 1.2 to 22 volts DC.

I just used the basic circuit diagram that came with the LM317T regulator.  Try an internet search to see if there are any diagrams that fit your needs.

The trick is finding the voltage feedback circuit to adjust the output.

Linear like LM317 is too expensive. And heavy.


PS (Z+9 hours) - I don;t understand the 1-14.4V range - why not ~8V or 10V etc to 16V?
