hello so I am attempting do do some diagnostics, but i am new to this electronic stuff. I have a 1999 gmc yukon and I want to test my MAP sensor with my voltmeter to check if it is putting out 5v. How would I do this? What settings I am assuming Vdc but what do I need to do? Can I test the sensor off the car? How can I check for a break in the map sensor pig tail harness? Any help would be appreciated I really want to try this out. I also want to check the

Your best bet would be to measure the voltage at the PCM and not at the MAP itself - this will allow you to verify if the wiring is in tact.

Set your volt meter, if not auto ranging, to a scale that is above the highest level you expect to measure (20v is a common range and it would work). Place your black probe on a ground point - any metal part of the vehicle that fastened directly to the frame/body). Your red probe will then measure voltage. You would be beneficial to make sure your PCM is sending 5vdc out to the MAP to power it and then check the signal coming back. It may require a second person to rev the motor up a bit while you are testing the signal. The signal should fluctuate with RPM.

If you have 5vdc coming out of the PCM to the MAP but you get no signal back at the PCM then repeat this test at the MAP. If there is 5vdc main power at the MAP but no signal out your MAP is bad (or has no ground). If there isn't 5vdc at the MAP then you have a broken wire. If there is 5vdc main power at the MAP and there is voltage on the signal out wire then the signal wire is broken between the MAP and PCM.
