i am interested in having a separate battery, or battery bank from the starter battery. this is so i can run an inverter with tv etc. i want it to be charged by the alternator, but not be used for starting, and not have the starter batt. used for inverter. how would i go about wiring this?

The most common way is a battery isolator. There are isolators made by PAC and Stinger that will do exactly what you want, they're not very expensive and the hookup is easy. One thing to be careful of is make sure the isolator you choose can handle the max output of the alternator. If you have a car equipped with a GM CS144 alternator, on some isolator systems you must add a signal wire to trip the alternator on, or you will not charge. I don't think that's the case with the PAC or Stinger ones, check before you buy.
