I had no AM reception on my '00 passat. FM could have been better too.
dealer said there was a short on the amplified antenna mast which shorted the radio too. it would work fine when they hooked up a new radio and put a new mast.
I had them replace the mast and I had an aftermarket in-dash CD player installed. It worked fine for a week and now there is no AM again.
any ideas?

Bad or pinched cable from the back of the deck to the masy of the antenna. AM radio you can get anywhere so there should be no reason why there's no signal. If this happened to two radios then it must be the connecting wire between the antenna mast and the radio.
