I am attemtpting to replace the blown 6"x9"s in the rear of a '89 Cavalier convertible. They are mounted in an odd place, right next to the shoulders of a rear passenger, kind of in the wall.
I am having difficulty figuring out how to remove the existing speakers. The grill seems locked very tight, with no visible clips or screws. Behind the speakers is a solid metal wall (can be seen from the convertible system's mechanical cavity), again, without any screws.
Has anyone successfully replaced these speakers before? How the heck do I gain access to these bad boys?
Thanks!

Chances are you will have to remove the rear seating area and also the side panels that hold the grill in place. Some vehicle manufacturer's did not think that someone would ever want to replace those wonderful paper cone, 15 watt max speakers that so graciously installed !!
I know that the Eagle talon , Plymouth Laser , Mitsu Eclipse you need to remove the entire rear section to get at those damn speakers without damaging the speaker grill.

Heh...that is what I was afraid of

I'll give it a shot this weekend. I will. also post my results, as I still see many of these types of J-Body 80's cars around...
Thanks for your input!

Hey chipster,
Seeing that you're already removing the side panels, it might be a good idea to add baffles to your speaks. It'll greatly improve the sound by filtering some of the cancellation caused by the rear waves.
