It's on the back side of the engine. It is near the firewall and down low on the motor. It's a real pain to get to.

2.2 and 2.4L 96 Cavalier ... WHITE wire at the PCM (Powertrain Controll Module) usually mounted on the firewall either side of the engine... sometimes mounted up near the battery.. sometimes opposite side of the car from the battery... usually identified by the large plug into the box with a bolt holding it together... about the biggest mass of wires under the hood you can find...  TIP: Trace the large wire loom from the PCM/ECM over as close as possible to where you went through the firewall, but still have room to tear into it and splice away... cut off excess wire and solder your connection in and tape er up

The easiest place to obtain the tach wire is inside the split tube looming running front to back on the driver's side of the motor overtop of the transmission. If you in this harness it heads to the back part of the motor. There is only one white wire in the harness and that is the tach wire for the vehicle. The engine computer is under the passenger's front fender ahead of the tire and is only accessible from underneath the vehicle. Going to the harness I described is easy and allows enough room to make a good connection with solder. For a good ignition source use the thick pink wire under the driver's side dash in the harness coming from the steering column/ignition switch.
