Soldered for the first time since junior high. We all made tin cups in 8th grade didn't we? Well I haven't needed to make any tin cups for the last few years so until I read the how to solder post I hadn't thought about it. Twist and tape! I want to refine my install and do some repairs to my celicas wiring so I bought a big a** iron so it'd be plenty hot..and HEAVY and corded I've used it once and wish I'd listened and got the butane. But it worked, kind of ran into a problem on the second speaker terminal I soldered the wire to. The wire would just fall off even though there was plenty of solder on both and plenty of heat. I finally made it stay put but I dunno what the problem was. Anyway I wound up with a cusom speaker install with connections I never will worry about, and wanted to thank the members of 12volt for the inspiration and the information. Hallalujah! 12volt rules!

soldering connections is always the best way to do things...thats the way i do all of my work...never have problems...btw solder wont stick if the components/wire are dirty, greasy, etc...use flux first and you shouldnt have anymore problems!

Get one of those torch type things off the Matco or Snap on trucks...they make things a lot easier.

to keep wires together, soldering alone might not be enough. Use something to hold the wires together, however soldering is "the best" for a very good contact, but don't rely on solder alone for holding strength.
Also I m curious about torch type soldering irons. Where can I get one, and is it safe for the environment and health? The last time I saw one in a kitchen store and at the back it said "this product is might cause cancer in the state of California" which made me think if it is not safe in California, why would anyone want to use an unsafe item? Maybe we can use it with a mask and not breathe the fumes?
