To All: i would like to ask all the experienced installers to pass on their expansive knowldege tips, to help us up and comming installers. I know there are many tips and tricks that as in any business one aquires when doing a job. I ask all to share what techniques at tips they have learned over the years, e.g. quick way to test polarity when installing aftermarket door speakers, these types of tips only experience can teach. Ok, when you get a deck install in a 97.5 Accord. there is a small s shaped peice of flexable tin that holds the radio in. Normally you would disassemble the entire console and dash to change the radio, BUT..... If you pull on the radio and pocket REALLY hard, you can bend this peice enough to remove the two 8mm bolts holding it in, then just bend the peice of tin back to shape in the vise.....grin.
Please don't let a customer see you do this as it usually requires the 'foot on the dash' approach...
You wanted a dirty little installer trick.... you got one.

when installing after market door speakers remove old speakers cut factory plug off with about and inch of wire still connected. plug harness back into speaker and take the battery off of your drill. touch the wires to the prongs insid the top, if the speaker pops forward, look at what is positive on your drill and that one is positive, if it pops backward, the negative on the drill is actually the positive for the speaker.

in the Honda SIR, you can use 1inch spacers to mount 6.5's in the door if you use a razor blade and shave a bit of the factory speakergrill/door panel ring off

ok i got a few.....
1) in GM vehicles..front speakers..darker color is positive, rear speakers...lighter color is positive
2)93 accord..very hard to get radio out unless u know this trick. get a angle driver on ur drill, go behind the radio with an 8mm socket and those two bolts can be removed easily.
3)DO NOT USE A TEST LIGHT FOR FINDING WIRES WHEN INSTALLING ALARM OR REMOTE STARTS!!!! MULTIMETER ONLY!!!
4)in nissan vehicles you can fit the trim ring on if you flip the pocket on top and radio is on the bottom
5)on porsches and mazdas the power antenna trigger is negative so you must use a relay
6)put a sheet of plywood in headliner when installing a flipdown monitor, this allows for easier mounting with less worry of drilling through the roof!
7)clutch bypass for remote start...just connect the two wires together on each side of the button..why make things more difficult than that? just leave ebrake on when u park and dont leave it in gear
8)the newer VW vehicles...when installing an amp there is no need to go thru the firewall to the battery and its very difficult too. under the driver dash you will find a junction with a 4 gauge ran to it from the battery, make ur connection there, ive done it several times, it works great!
9)if u crack panels...as we all do from time to time, just melt hot glue on the side not visibie and it will seal the crack to where its unnoticable to the customer. thats another dirty installer trick!
10)last one for now...my tactic for headrest monitors is this...after you cut the hole and pull out some of the padding, use ur razor knife to dig trenches on the left and right side of the hold and shove thin, like 1/4 inch thick AT MOST, peices of wood in there. the peices should be about 1-2 inches wide. shove the top and bottom of the peice of wood in the trench on both sides and this way they are in there good and when u put the cage in for the monitor, drill ur screws in and when they catch the wood it will sink the cage in giving the sunk in, flush look so when u snap the monitor in..it looks clean!

when installing an alarm never test any wires coming from or going to a yellow plug as this is connected to the airbag and they can inflate.

In a 99-2001 3-door S-10 you can fit the factory jack and tire iron stuff into the inside of the rear door panel, thus eliminating the large cover and coffee table in the back.
