I am planning on adding a trailer hitch to my Highlander and wondering how many connections are needed when attaching it? There are 3-pin, 5-pin and 7pin connectors and I am wondering what it is all about. Also is it a good idea to buy it and install it myself or get it done at a shop? If shop, then where's a good place to get it installed?

Go with the 3 -pin, its the most common.  Its 3 hot wires and a ground.  The three hot wires are green (Right Stop/Turn), yellow (Left Stop/Turn), and brown (tail...license illumination....side markers.)  The white wire is ground.

https://www.accessconnect.com/trailerwiring.htm has vehicle specific wiring harnesses. Also explains the different types of plugs.  I saw one on there for a toyota highlander that plugs into your exisitng taillight harness
