I have had My set of Infinity Reference 6.5" components for about a year and a half. I have had problems blowing the tweeters when running through an alpine mrv-f307 and the passive crossovers. I have since changed up to an alpine mrv-f409 amp for this set. te amp has a high pass and low pass for all 4 channels, so i am running the mids through bandpass (55hx to 3500 hz) and the tweeters through highpass at 3500hz. Sound is better and i havent blown a tweeter, but now the mid drivers (3 of em now) they are in homemade kickpanels (sealed box).

when they blow, it send the amp to protect mode (as if it shorts out in the voice coil) and when you push on the cone, it sounds scratchy - like sandpaper.

are they just getting too hot in the box? they say they are good for 90 w (that is through passive x-over) the tweeter itself is 50w rms, and my amp is 60x4 (i think) Am i just giving em too much juice???

umm if you're blowing speakers, they are being over-driven.
if the drivers can't handle the volumes you want, get better speakers.. perhaps a set of JL Audio XR series or two.
also keep the gains on the amp(s) turned down. you may be introducing distortion and thus causing driver damage.

If indeed you have a MRV-F409 then you are giving each speaker 40 watts ( the amp is rated at 40 x 4 ). Peak power is 120 watts x 4 which should easily power those speakers. What do you have the gains set at  for the woofer ? If this is too high you can distort the sound coming off the speakers which will eventually cause damage to the voice coils of the speaker.

ok i guess i should tell more.... 4v signal comes from alpine 7977 deck through a set of audiocontrol EQT's (where peak output signal with pink noise is 3.1volts), then to a clarion EQS750 (7band EQ with EQ disabled - this is my master volume control/fader/ sub control) then to each amp - alpine mrv-1507 (subs), mrv-f409 (front), mrv-f307 (rear). Gains on ALL amps are set right to minimum ( fully counter clockwise)

Crossover on sub - 55hz (24 db/oct???)

mid crossover on 409 55hz lowpass 3500hz highpass (12 db/oct)

tweeter highpass on 409 3500hz (12 db/oct)

the mrv-f307 is running the rears (infinity 5.25 components) off 2 channels with the highpass at 75 hz and using the infinity passive crossovers

I would ditch the EQS750 because you don't need to be able to fade a system like you have. The EQT's should be wired in LEFT and RIGHT channels not FRONT and REAR. Set the MRV-F409's gains a little higher than the rears and then crossover the frequency higher than 55 hz. This is way too low for the front speakers to be performing properly. THat's what the subs are for anyway.... crossover the front speakers at about 80 - 100 hz and ( if the sub can handle it ) cross it over at the same in lowpass. The reason I would do this is because the front speakers are for your mid bass not your bass repoduction so why waste the power to make them go to 55 hz when your sub is doing all that for you ? This is probably why your speakers are also distorting... too low a frequency at higher volumes.

BTW: How did you equalize your sub channel when the EQT's are only mono input and you have three amplifiers ?? I ask this because I have a 8 channel system in our car and I used 2 EQT's as well but I did not equalize my (3) Boston 12.5's because it's only for SPL reasons. The only way I could see you doing this is splitting the output RCA 3 times or using the Alpine's RCA line out for the sub amp. What subs are you using BTW ??

here is a pic to mebee help you see the system better:

OOps - rear component set is 505cs not 605

Subs are alpine 12" type R single voice coil in 2.8cu ft sealed box

will try higher x-over settings thanks

Are running the subs in parallel or in series ? I had a 1507 before and it didn't like 2 ohm loads very much ( went for an Xtant 1001DX ) which is 1 ohm stable. Looks like you have a winning system there !! Should sound incredible with those EQT's and those amplifiers ! Just make sure you turn down the INPUT sensitivity of the EQT's to match the amplifier's input voltage otherwise instant distortion posted_image

thank you. the subs are running in series - 8 ohm. i am gonna play fort a bit and try stereo 4 ohm (the input signal is still mono) I was running 2 ohm mono, (hooked up parralel) without much notice. the amp didnt mind - it never once cut out or overheated - I am running serious power wire to it and have 2 - 1farad caps right at the amp.

Any tips on tuning a system like this- with no RTA. I am constantly playing and upgrading and at $75 a shot to go to a shop with a RTA, it gets a little much.

Without an RTA.... your depending on your ears. You should only have to go and have the system RTA'd once unless your changing speakers or subs all the time.
