Subject: Enable Car Alarm siren while driving

Hello.
I am a member of my town's volunteer ambulence corps. and i am wondering if there is any way to set up some way to allow my car's alarm to go off while driving using a switch or something. The siren and lights would really help clear the road. Since actual emergency sirens cost a hell of a lot, i thought this would be a cheap alternative. I have a Mitzubishi Galant 94. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

First and foremost, you need to verify the legality of doing this in a personal vehicle.

My alarm went off one day while I was driving but I don't remember what I exactly did to achieve that. It was when I was messing with the settings when I newly installed my OmegaMax. Of course I stopped rightaway by pulling over and stopped the siren, but the legality might be the first issue. Setting it off should be really possible but I don't know how yet as I did not require that. Good luck and let us know what you find out both legally and technically.

Well, the legality of this isnt really too much of a concern to me. I would only be using the system when responding to a call, prob a code 2 or 3 anyway, and whenever there is a call, the police are dispached before the ambulance and they know that were going to the ambulance building anyway. So the chances of any member getting in trouble would be remote. And, of course, i know people. But anyway, i am not at all expeirienced with cars so all the help ill be getting will be from you guys. Thanks again.
PS: yes, it is technically illegal. I do have a permit for a tiny blue light on the dashboard, but face it, that doesnt do $h17.

Figure out if your alarm has a positive or negative trigger for the siren, and hook up a switch to the siren's pos or neg wire, depending on your alarm, or how about get a toggle switch, with a momentary, and latched position, so you can give a quick chirp of the siren to get people to move, and the latched side, to keep the siren on constant.  As far as flashing lights go, use your Hazzards or grab some relays , and make some wig wag heaadlights

I have no idea whether the siren is positivly or negativly triggered nor do i know how to find out. I looked at the actual speaker that produces the siren, and the wire goes behind the firewall thing and into the bowels of the car. The alarm is stock though, so if anyone knew what kind of alarm was put in the 94 Mitzubishi Galant, i guess that would answer the question. But then theres the problem of actually getting to the alarm 'computer' thing. if i knew where to start i could prob find it myself. that toggle swich is a good idea too.

I think it will serve no purpose.  A "real" siren, such as on a police crusier or a fire truck puts out 100 watts.  While the siren of an alarm will put out about 30 Watts.  People will not hear it especially if they have th A/C or stereo running.  If you want to put a siren for volly purposes you can find one for pretty cheap on ebay or other places on the web.  Good luck and stay safe.

i guess thats true. didnt know it was only 30 watts. But, its summer, people will have there windows open. also, the lights might help. i could even disconnect the speaker and use only the lights.

soory, i'm drunk, but lights are not enough.  siren is the way to go. you can keep a kcheep red flasher anywhere you go that sellls car parts and whatnots, whiel the siren itself... if you stop by a junkyard, there's bound to be a cop car somewhers... i've seen them with the light even on top, while the sirne ,i'm sure, is somewhere still too.  throwing that in, on a switch wouldn't be difficult...

battery -> Switch -> Siren -> ground

ya know, that'd be cool, and strangely enough, legal, given your situation. if your'e a volunteer, then its a good thing, and the cops, whom like you cause you're on their side, won't mess with you, regardless of legalities

if you know people (im guessing in the ambulance/cop fields) then your best bet would be to ask them (either fire, ambulance or cop department) to get your car hooked up to a siren. it would probably not cost you anything since you're doing a service for the city. just a thought.

well, im not that important that they'd hook up my car for me. thats for sure. and my key thing doesnt have a panic button. I mean this isnt the biggest deal. the deck strobe light that i have only is visible to people directly in front of me, and at intersections people have no idea im there and it sucks. i need headlight and taillight strobes but thats just financially out of the question
