FS,

I just sold my 99 Ranger that had a secondary battery!  I just used a 200w HD solenoid and put the battery in the back.  I installed two 150a resettable breakers, front and back as close as possible to the batteries.  4g will work fine.  Ground the second battery to the frame as good as possible with starwashers & bolts.

You can use an isolator but it cuts the voltage to the secondary battery by .8 volts.  Solenoid connected to the ignition will work, you just have to choose ignition or accessory.  If you will draw a lot of power from the secondary, hook it to accessory.

Best of luck!

Sean
